| At the July 29 meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club, member John Horrigan took his audience on a vivid journey to the bottom of the world describing the Antarctic expedition he and his wife Siripond made. Traveling via Bangkok, Buenos Aires, and Ushuaia, Horrigan joined a G Adventures expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. Crossing the notoriously treacherous Drake Passage, his group experienced remarkably calm waters—dubbed the "Drake Lake"—which allowed for efficient travel and several successful shore landings via Zodiac boats. |
Throughout the journey, strict environmental and safety protocols were enforced, requiring passengers to disinfect footwear, stick to designated paths, and avoid disturbing local wildlife. A major highlight was the abundant fauna, including gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguins, as well as seals, whales, and a rare sighting of a juvenile emperor penguin far outside its typical range. The trip showcased dramatic scenery such as compressed blue glacier ice, towering icebergs, Deception Island, and the Lemaire Channel. Aboard the vessel, passengers balanced rigorous daily briefings and educational lectures by naturalists with fine meals and polar activities, concluding an expedition that underscored both the environmental fragility and grand scale of the polar region.
